How to test the communication between the two devices:
IMPORTANT TO NOTICE!
This Plug-and-Play solution is factory-paired and ready to use straight out of the box. Maximum range is achieved in line-of-sight conditions, when the two antennas can “see” each other without obstacles, and there is a clear, unobstructed visibility between the two antennas. For cases where this is not possible, we can provide a 10-meter extension cable that can be used to lead the antennas to the roof, to the side of the building, to a place where the two antennas can communicate clearly.
Wireless Communication Disclaimer
As this device relies on wireless radio communication in the license-free 868 MHz ISM band, its performance may be affected by environmental conditions and external radio interference.
Reliable operation depends on several factors, including installation conditions, antenna positioning, line-of-sight between the transmitter and receiver, surrounding building materials, electromagnetic noise, and the presence of other devices operating in the same frequency band.
Although the system has been designed to provide robust and reliable communication under normal operating conditions, uninterrupted performance cannot be guaranteed in every installation. Nearby equipment transmitting on or close to the 868 MHz frequency, industrial machinery, metal structures, reinforced concrete, or other sources of radio interference may reduce communication range or temporarily disrupt data transmission.
For optimal performance, proper antenna placement and a site-specific installation assessment are recommended. Since every installation environment is unique, communication quality may vary depending on local conditions.
What does our RS485 Signal Transducer on Radio mean?
The LSP-STR-485 is a signal transducer with radio communication that can establish a connection between 2 devices communicating with RS485 signals. You need 2 of this product. One should be mounted on the transmitter side and the other on the receiver side. Once configured, our device will allow you to communicate wirelessly with the 2 RS485 devices using radio waves.

If you have multiple devices in your system, only 1 device at the processing unit is enough. That one device can handle 254 other devices.
Replace the RS485 cable between your Smart Meter and inverter with a reliable wireless connection
The Levtech Wireless RS485 Signal Transmitter is a wireless RS485 bridge designed to replace a physical RS485 cable between two compatible RS485 devices, such as a solar Smart Meter and inverter.
Instead of installing a long RS485 cable between the Smart Meter and the inverter, the communication is transmitted wirelessly over an 868 MHz radio link.
The system consists of a factory-paired transmitter and receiver, allowing RS485 communication to be transferred wirelessly between the two locations.
It is particularly useful in solar installations where the Smart Meter and inverter are located in different parts of a building, in separate buildings, outdoors, or where installing a new RS485 cable would require significant wiring work, drilling or excavation.

This can eliminate the need to route a long RS485 cable through walls, ceilings, shafts, outdoor areas or between buildings.
For compatible solar inverter and Smart Meter combinations, the Levtech Wireless RS485 Bridge provides a practical alternative to installing a new physical communication cable.
When should you use a wireless RS485 bridge or why do you need the RS485 Signal Transducer on radio?
This device is an excellent solution for places where cable connection is not possible or difficult. Or it would simply not be aesthetically pleasing.
A concrete example is the case when you need to connect a remote Modbus device outdoors. Whether you would install the wiring on a pole or underground, you would need special wiring, not to mention cable pulling or digging.
The Levtech Wireless RS485 Bridge is useful when:
1. The Smart Meter and inverter are far apart
If the Smart Meter is installed near the electrical distribution board while the inverter is located elsewhere, installing a new RS485 cable can be inconvenient.
The wireless bridge allows the two devices to communicate without running a long physical RS485 cable.
2. There is no suitable cable route
Sometimes the problem is not the distance but the building itself.
Walls, floors, concrete structures, roads, yards or existing installations can make cable installation difficult or expensive.
3. You need to avoid drilling or excavation
For some installations, routing a new cable means drilling through walls or running cables underground.
A wireless RS485 connection can eliminate this work when radio communication conditions are suitable.
4. The RS485 cable would be visually undesirable
In residential, commercial and architectural installations, running a visible communication cable may not be desirable.
5. You need to connect equipment in separate locations
The wireless RS485 bridge can be used where two RS485 devices are installed in different locations and a suitable radio path can be established.
Is this a Wi-Fi solution?
No.
The Levtech Wireless RS485 Bridge uses an 868 MHz radio link for communication between the transmitter and receiver.
It does not require:
- Wi-Fi
- Internet
- a Wi-Fi router
- cloud services
- a mobile application
- a cellular connection
The communication takes place directly between the two Levtech wireless units.
This makes the system particularly suitable for installations where Internet access is unavailable or where the Smart Meter ↔ inverter communication should remain independent from the customer’s network infrastructure.
Why 868 MHz?
The system operates in the 868 MHz radio band, which is widely used for industrial and wireless communication applications in Europe.
Compared with higher-frequency wireless technologies such as 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, 868 MHz radio can be advantageous for certain long-range applications because lower-frequency radio signals generally have different propagation characteristics and can perform well over longer distances and through some obstacles.
However, the actual range depends on the installation environment.
For the most reliable communication, the antennas should have a clear line of sight whenever possible.
How does the wireless RS485 bridge work?
The principle is simple:
Smart Meter → RS485 → Levtech transmitter → 868 MHz wireless link → Levtech receiver → RS485 → inverter
The Levtech system transfers the RS485 communication wirelessly between the two devices.
The wireless bridge does not replace the Smart Meter or inverter and does not process the meter data in the cloud. Its purpose is to replace the physical RS485 communication path with a radio connection.
This makes it particularly useful when the Smart Meter and inverter cannot be conveniently connected with a cable.
Available transmission ranges
The Levtech Wireless RS485 Bridge is available in two versions: 400 m for larger residential installations and light industrial applications and 800 m for industrial installations and longer-distance connections.
The specified distance is a maximum open-area transmission range. Actual performance depends on the environment, antenna position, building construction, interference and other radio conditions.
Important: line of sight
The best results are achieved when the two antennas have a clear line of sight.
If the Smart Meter and inverter are separated by a building, reinforced concrete wall or another significant obstacle, the antennas may need to be relocated.
For difficult installations, a 10-meter antenna extension cable can be used to move an antenna to a more suitable position, such as a roof, exterior wall or another location with better radio visibility.
Plug-and-play installation
The wireless transmitter and receiver are supplied as a factory-paired set.
For compatible preconfigured applications, this significantly simplifies installation: connect the RS485 interfaces and power supplies, position the antennas correctly, and establish the wireless link.
For applications requiring communication parameter changes, the RS485 communication parameters can be configured according to the connected equipment.
The device supports configurable:
- Baud rate
- Parity
- Stop bits
- Device address / communication parameters where applicable
For configuration, a computer and USB-to-RS485 converter can be used.
RS485 and Modbus RTU communication
The Levtech Wireless RS485 Bridge is designed for applications using RS485 serial communication, including systems based on Modbus RTU.
The wireless bridge is intended to transfer the communication between the connected RS485 devices rather than replacing their communication protocol.
This means that the connected Smart Meter and inverter continue to communicate using their normal RS485 communication interface.
The wireless link simply replaces the physical cable between them.
Wiring? Not a big deal!
As the RS485 Signal Transducer uses 230VAC, you can easily mount in any electrical cabinet. Power is supplied via the bottom connector.
The RS485 signal wires (GND, A, B) are connected at the top. If communication fails, wires A and B can be interchanged. It is recommended to use twisted wire pairs for the communication lines between a Signal Transducer and a distance device.

Best overall choice when the objective is simply:
“I need to replace the RS485 cable between my Smart Meter and inverter.”
Wireless RS485 vs Wi-Fi RS485
A common alternative is to use two Wi-Fi-to-RS485 converters.
This can work, but it introduces an additional dependency: the Wi-Fi network.
A dedicated wireless RS485 bridge has an important advantage for many solar installations:
Smart Meter → wireless bridge → inverter
rather than:
Smart Meter → Wi-Fi converter → Wi-Fi network → Wi-Fi converter → inverter
For an installer who simply needs to replace a physical RS485 cable, the first architecture is usually easier to understand and deploy.
Wireless RS485 vs LoRa
LoRa is a radio modulation technology designed for long-range, low-data-rate communication.
A LoRa-based Modbus bridge, such as the SENECA Z-LINK2-LO, can therefore be an excellent industrial solution.
However, you do not necessarily need LoRa to replace an RS485 cable.
The more important questions are:
- Is the RS485 communication transparent?
- Is the latency suitable for the application?
- Is the wireless link reliable?
- Is the range sufficient?
- Does it work with the inverter and Smart Meter?
- How difficult is configuration?
- Does the system require Wi-Fi or Internet?
- Is it designed for point-to-point use?
For a solar installer, the practical result can be more important than whether the radio layer is called LoRa, RF or something else.
Our recommendation
For a solar installation where the main objective is:
“I need to connect my Smart Meter and inverter without installing an RS485 cable.”
we recommend looking first at a dedicated point-to-point wireless RS485 bridge.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
In an urban environment, the distance between the two devices was two hundred meters. I had no other solution, since digging or wiring is not possible here, so I tried this product, and it works very well, I can only recommend it. They recommended that I place the antennas so to see each other, because in this way the communication is secure and stable. We had to use an extension cord on one side, we ran the antenna out to the side of the house, and it works perfectly.
Peter Grean –
I also bought an extension cable because there was a large brick building between the smart meter and the inverter, and I used the cable to run the antennas to the attic and roof so that the signal transmission from the two antennas would be fine. It works, I’m satisfied.
